.black and white.

.if you know me, you know i have a sweet tooth.

and i definitely prefer baking to cooking. baking is just much more relaxing. so, on vday, i decided that not only did i want to make a nice dinner, but i also wanted to bake something. now, this was clearly for myself, as j for some reason has an aversion to sweet things (why am i with him??), so i started poking through my currently-in-the-process-of-being-organized-so-they-are-ridiculously-messy-and-disorganized recipes (i am trying to shift everything from my cooking magazines to recipe cards - it's a slow process), and came across this black and white cookie recipe. and i knew i had to make them.

why, you ask? well, i love black and white cookies. i'm pretty sure i always have loved them (it's an unconditional love - they must have had me and these cookies in mind when they came up with the concept of vday). but i think i really became addicted to them while i was in florence. you see, in the supermarket (oh esselunga, how i miss thee) that i went to while i lived in florence, they had these black and white cookies. the white part was, well, white, and the black part was a little version of florence's coat of arms. the cookies were amazing, and i would buy them whenever they had them in the store. that is, until they stopped selling them halfway through my time there. every week, i went back to the store, praying that the cookies would magically reemerge from the depths of the store's bakery, but alas - no such luck. they must have been some sort of summer/early fall seasonal thing. and i loved them.

so, thence began my addiction to black and white cookies (hey, at least it's not coke, right?). except i haven't eaten black and white cookies since. i think i didn't want to spoil my view of the perfect little dark and white fiorentina discs from heaven.

however, i decided this weekend it was time to make my own version. because i am not a ridiculously talented artist/chef, it was a bit out of the question to make the florence coat of arms in my dark and white cookies. so i opted for a regular spiral. i could have done a checkerboard, but that seemed a bit complicated for my pea-brain.

the cookies are actually really easy to make, although it is a bit time-consuming to make the two doughs separately. but definitely worth it, because the cookies were amazing. even j enjoyed them (i shall convert him to dessertism yet!), so i consider it a victory. they aren't the prettiest things in the world (i need to work on my double-dough rolling skills, apparently), but man they tasted good. not esselunga good, but close.

we decided that you definitely have to eat them by color, though, to fully appreciate their goodness. you know, by spiraling in to the center. kind of like how i eat corn one row of kernels at a time. am i weird? yes. but we already knew that.

maybe some day i will learn how to make the fiorentina coat of arms in dough. until then, i'm stuck with these guys.

.cheers.
